How to make the “bear necessities” of life come to you.

June 24th, 2013

Phil Harris was born today in 1904, you might now him better as the voice of Baloo the Bear in the Jungle Book. In the spirit of the “Bear Necessities” try and keep things simple this week, focus on your blessings, the simple good things in your life that bring real happiness… not all that other “stuff” and “worry” that can take up too much of our time.

So, how does Baloo do it?

Step number 1:  Baloo enjoys Mother Nature’s Recipes, do you? Put aside some time this week to get out, out of the office, out of the house, out of the TV room, wherever you find yourself in your comfort zone… and enjoy the free and simple wonder of the fresh air, green grass and all that nature has to offer. While you’re out there, sit down for a minute, close your eyes and take a deep breath or two or three.  Listen to the sounds around you, feel the air, or sun or rain against your face and be at one with nature… let your mind take a break from all those bits and pieces you have been worrying about, and be at peace even for just a few moments. Try and find time to do this every week, if not every day.

Step number 2:  Baloo couldn’t be fonder of his big home with all those bees buzzing in the trees, making honey just for him.  Baloo sees the positive, he sees the world as his oyster, he counts his blessings, and he embraces all the good things the world brings him on a daily basis. Are you fond of your home?  Your environment?  The adventures life brings you?  How about getting a blank piece of paper now and listing all the good things in your life?  What people, events, hobbies, places, achievements, and memories are you grateful for?  When you have your list, how about spreading the joy a little by calling, or letting 3 people know you are grateful for their being in your life?

Step number 3: When Baloo picks a paw paw, or a prickly pear, and pricks his paw, well next time, he knows to beware!  Baloo learns from his experiences.  He doesn’t view making a mistake as a failure, instead it’s an opportunity to learn and to develop a better strategy.  Next time Baloo picks up a prickly pear, he uses his claw instead of his paw. We  are often our own toughest critics, blaming ourselves over and over again for something we did that we cannot change and we stay in a place of pain and regret.  How about next time you make a mistake, you don’t take the pain option, and choose instead to get back some personal power by analysing what went wrong and what you will do differently in the future. Don’t waste so much energy on feeling bad about it, just learn, learn, learn.  In the words of John Wooden, “If you’re not making mistakes, then you’re not doing anything.  I’m positive that a doer makes mistakes”.

And if you don’t want to take my word for it, how about you listen to Baloo? He’s a wise bear indeed! 🙂
